We only take up to 6 passengers at a time, allowing you to escape the crowds as you join Captain Alan on a once in lifetime!
Every summer the humpback whales return to feed in the cold biodiverse waters of Southeast Alaska after spending the winter mating and birthing in Hawaii. These huge whales arrive in Alaska hungry after months without eating and are keen to fill their bellies with herring and other small bait fish. We see them interacting every day, during the morning and afternoon (there is not a specific “ideal time”). As there is ample surrounding wildlife, we also enjoy possible sightings of seals, sea lions, bald eagles, and on occasion killer whales, black bears, brown bears or sitka blacktail deer.
Captain Alan’s passion for the outdoors and his love of the animals is legendary. He is known for his enthusiastic narration, story telling and sharing of local knowledge. He runs every tour, so you will have the opportunity to learn about whale behavior, life in Alaska and much more! You’ll come as a customer and leave as friend.
Rest assured at Adventures in Alaska we are responsible whale watchers. The whale’s welfare and freedom are important to us. While we are whale watching, we minimize our impact on the whale’s behavior by following all federal laws as stated in the Marine Mammal Protection Act. We do not approach the whales closer than 100 yards. We do not place our boat in the path of an oncoming whale. We do not chase or harass any marine mammals. We always operate at a slow speed around the whales. We live in Juneau, and we care about the whales as much as you do!
We have created an affordable private Small Group Tour that gives you exclusivity of the boat for up to 6 family or friends. This allows for comfort and space among the people you know. Our guests have been especially happy on this tour as they can fully relax and feel safe.

If you want your tour to be “your way,” then book a private whale watch! You have the opportunity to spend as much time as you wish with the whales, cruising through stunning scenery, capturing fantastic photo’s, or simply relaxing in comfort with a full narration from Captain Alan.
We can help arrange a taxi to pick you up at, or near, your ship/ hotel. You will be transported 30 mins to our dock where you will meet Captain Alan. We’ll head out for a private adventure to see humpback whales, seals, sea lions, mountains, glaciers, eagles, porpoises and perhaps even killer whales!
We offer tour options from 3.5 hours up to 7 hours, the choice is yours, and the boat is all “yours” for up to 6 passengers total. Bring your own soft drinks, water, or snacks. Transportation back to your ship/ hotel is approx. 30 minutes.
ADDITIONAL BRIEF DETAILS
Our boat, the Narwhal, is a custom built whale watching vessel designed specifically for the conditions in Southeast Alaska. We only take a maximum of 6 passengers which allows for plenty of personal space. The boat has a heated cabin, sliding windows, and easy access to the head (toilet). The viewing deck on the back is spacious for moving about as well as 4 additional seats.
Captain Alan has been a whale watching captain in Juneau for nine years, along with crewing on boats locally for six years prior (15 years total in SE Alaska). He is intimately familiar with the surrounding coastal waters both professionally and personally.
All city and state health mandates regarding COVID are a priority. Masks are required in the cabin (windows/ doors remain open for air flow) and all the high touch areas of the boat are cleaned in between trips.
