What is the best time of year to fish in Alaska?

When you are planning to go fishing in Juneau Alaska, the first thing to consider is, what is the best time of year to fish in Alaska? Another question I get asked frequently is what are the Juneau fishing seasons?

Fishing in Juneau in June

As you may or may not know, salmon fishing in Juneau is very much “seasonal.” Alaska Department of Fish and Game allows king salmon fishing in Juneau as early as April and May. This time of year it is a catch and release fishery only. We fish with a barbless single hook during these months. Retention for king salmon is usually open by June 15 which means it’s time to fish for king salmon, with the potential of keeping them. We confirm this once the Alaska Department of Fish and Game state the “opening regulations.” Click here to fish in May and June

Fishing in Juneau in July and August:

The king run generally wraps up early July, but by then the pink salmon and chum salmon are starting to show up. By the end of July the cohos are returning and fishing in Juneau is great through the month of August and into September. Halibut fishing in Juneau is slow in May and early June, there are some halibut around and catching them is possible. However July and August are stronger months for halibut fishing in Juneau, and it starts to taper off in September. If you are bringing family out and wish to mix your fishing day with whale watching we can do this too. Click here to fish in July and August and September
